 Dark Desire by Francesca Quarto

I never considered another title for this work. I considered the passion between the character of the Vampire and the lover he seeks to possess,  to be tainted by the evil that drives him.

I began this work early last year, before another darkness fell on this land in the form of COVID 19.  I used my writing to compensate for the increasing isolation I felt around my life.  It was released in December of 2020, before Christmas.  I was unable to do a formal Book Launch, and social media was my only real introduction of this Paranormal Thriller to the world at large.

I have a front room in the open flow of my downstairs, that I refer to as the Willow Room. My favorite place as a very little girl was hiding from my siblings and the world under a giant willow tree, with branches that swept the ground and protected my daydreaming escapes.  My desk, computer, printer, two book cases and a side shelf hold all my needed tools, including three dictionaries.  You can't be too careful with your words!

I always get up early, between six and six-thirty most mornings.  There are days I'm down here earlier if I'm feeling under pressure to get to a project.  Coffee is my friend and the only friend I want to lay eyes upon in the wee hours!

Dark Desire is a Paranormal Thriller for Adult readers as it does have scenes with adult content. Sex that is!  One of my favorite characters in this book is a Voodoo Priestess named Mari.  Here is a snippet of the story toward the end of the book when Mari is trying to help save the beautiful Maggie. The Vampire who would possess Maggie is himself possessed by his raging desire for her. The setting is the Louisiana Bayou.

chapter 52...page 269

Mari had been patient long enough.  She let the wave wash over her, tumbling within its suffocating grip until she felt as battered as a beaten rug.  He's up to some of his fancy tricks, she thought grimly, wringing water from her dress skirt.  I can't let him know he didn't succeed  in drowning me like a rat in a floundering ship.  I'll leave a little something to show I am lost in his black waters.

Mari reached under her dress, pulling her gris-gris free of the sodden chemise.

"Hate to part with this," she muttered.

Sighing, she slipped the thin leather string the amulet hung from over her head.  Her own fire stone bounced its small glow about with her tugging.  It's light fell across a pendent with a moon-like stone surrounded by tiny bird bones and all mounted in a pure silver setting.

"The beast can/t touch you my darling, but he'll think me as dead as I'd never part with you," she muttered, placing the charm on the sodden ground. Mari knew the vampire would detect its powers and investigate. She was sure he'd believe her drowned in the dark avalanche of waters he freed upon the tunnel.

that boy is fairly clever, for a dandy, the old woman thought.  She'd grown fond of the young man and was glad he'd managed to save himself and the girl.

Mari couldn't let them know that destroying the vampire was paramount, even to saving them.

--------------------------

This little peek at Mari, the very ancient Voodoo Priestess shows her resiliency even though she's facing a powerful enemy, she keeps her cool.  Mari is also quite quirky and I enjoyed her temperament and comments.

I never keep any corrections, edits or total rewrites. If it's a change that's needed, it gets changed!

Tears Before Reading

Tears Before Reading
by
Francesca Quarto

She held the book of love poems,
written, no doubt, by an angst filled romantic
about passionless marriage and feckless lovers
Afraid to turn the pages
knowing they held her grief and despair
her guilt and shame
Putting it aside, she drinks deeply
from the glass of amber dreams
Again, reaching for the volume
she is certain she hears her name
No, she is only reading aloud the author's
She is perplexed until she remembers
she is the author of all her pain.
