Tears Before Reading

Tears Before Reading
by
Francesca Quarto

She held the book of love poems,
written, no doubt, by an angst filled romantic
about passionless marriage and feckless lovers
Afraid to turn the pages
knowing they held her grief and despair
her guilt and shame
Putting it aside, she drinks deeply
from the glass of amber dreams
Again, reaching for the volume
she is certain she hears her name
No, she is only reading aloud the author's
She is perplexed until she remembers
she is the author of all her pain.
